Planning Board OKs Early Open of Carwash

After months of debate, the Planning Commission has unanimously approved an agreement giving the owner of Paul’s Car Wash at 8511 Moody St. a six-month extension to put the finishing touches on his business.

The agreement allows business owner Paul Son to open the business before completing construction requirements, including landscaping and road signs.

Son’s attorney, Keith Nelson, said the request was made because of financial hardships Son is facing that could result in the loss of the business.

“We acknowledge there have been some problems in complying with the city’s conditions, but he will comply,” Nelson said. “If the amendment wasn’t approved, he could have lost his business and there would be an empty lot that is not healthy for the city.”

As part of the amendment agreement, Son must post a $95,000 bond for the estimated costs of a traffic median.

The carwash is expected to open around Labor Day, Nelson said.

The carwash project sparked controversy with residents, who asked whether the small city of 1.8 square miles needs a third carwash. The project required 10 public hearings since Son applied for a permit in 1992.
