Yankees to Start Irabu Wednesday

Hideki Irabu’s second chance with the New York Yankees will begin Wednesday when he will start against the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium.
Irabu, a Japanese right-hander who signed a $12.8-million, four-year deal with the Yankees, was 2-2 with a 7.97 earned-run average in four games with New York in July.
He struck out nine to beat Detroit in his major league debut at Yankee Stadium on July 10, but he had a 10.54 ERA in his next three starts and was demoted to triple-A Columbus. He had a 2-0 record with a 1.20 ERA with Columbus.

Frank Thomas, who leads the AL with a .351 average, was scratched from the Chicago White Sox’s starting lineup because of a hip injury.
Thomas strained his left hip flexor muscle in the seventh inning of Chicago’s 5-2 victory Saturday.
