Claim Jumper, the privately held Irvine-based restaurant chain with 19 locations, fared well in a Restaurants & Institutions survey of the nation’s top 400 restaurant concepts. The annual survey tracks changes in the competitive restaurant and food-service industry.

The restaurant chain founded by Craig Nickoloff--who now serves as president and chief executive officer--ranked No. 179 on the Top 400 list. The chain is the nation’s 20th-largest dinner house chain, according to the magazine, and finished No. 9 in the trade journal’s list of chains with highest average unit sales.

Claim Jumper, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, opened its first restaurant in Los Alamitos. The company has units under construction in Valencia and in Redmond, Wash. During the coming year, Claim Jumper will open restaurants in Northridge and Phoenix.
