CSUN Asks Public to Join AIDS Walk Team

Cal State Northridge, which last year assembled the largest university team in the event’s history, is inviting the community to join its faculty, staff, students and alumni for the 13th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles on Sept. 28.

Last year, more than 25,000 people, including 650 from CSUN, helped raise $3.4 million for AIDS Project Los Angeles, school officials said. APLA, which is the main beneficiary of the event, is the largest AIDS service, education and advocacy organization in Southern California.

“The university is committed to community service and the fight against AIDS,” said Amy Reichbach, a health educator at CSUN and coordinator of the school’s AIDS Walk team.

“This event is an inspiring reminder of our ability to come together to pursue an important goal. The more of us out there, hopefully the louder the message will be,” Reichbach said.

CSUN spokeswoman Carmen Ramos Chandler said the school is inviting members of the community to join CSUN’s team this year in an attempt to surpass last year’s record turnout.

“We see our community as spreading beyond the boundaries of the campus,” Chandler said. “Anyone who wants to walk with us is welcome to sign up.”

Although the event is still more than a month away, walkers are encouraged to sign up early and to begin gathering sponsors, Chandler said.

There is no fee to participate in the AIDS Walk, but registration is required.
