Writers Guild Has Tentative TV Deal

Representatives of the Writers Guild said they have reached agreement on a tentative three-year contract with producers and the three largest television networks, the guild disclosed Tuesday.

The contract between the guild’s Eastern and Western branches and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers was to have expired in May 1998.

The new contract, details of which are to be made public later this week, would extend through May 2001.

The three networks, NBC, ABC and CBS, negotiate separately with the guilds, while other networks such as Fox negotiate through the producers alliance.

Members of the guild will vote on the new pact Sept. 18.

The agreement continues what has been a relatively peaceful period of labor relations during the 1990s for the Writers Guild and producers following the devastating 1988 strike by the guild.

That strike crippled the TV season that year, and had a far-ranging impact throughout Hollywood.
