An 18-year-old man was in Ventura County Jail on Tuesday in connection with the attempted robbery of a Simi Valley check-cashing business, authorities said.
Officers made the arrest after the clerk at Century Check Cashing identified the suspect.
Dimiter Micov, 53, of Los Angeles was alone in the business in the 2300 block of Tapo Street about 9:40 a.m. Monday when a man entered and said he needed to cash a check.
A short time later, the door to the glassed-in employee area suddenly opened and the man approached Micov armed with a crowbar, said Simi Valley Police Sgt. Andy McCluskey.
Micov grabbed a handgun and the intruder fled empty-handed.
Authorities identified the suspect as David Upton of Simi Valley. McCluskey said Upton had cashed his paychecks at the business in the past.
Detectives found Upton at his home in the 1200 block of Patricia Avenue and he was arrested about 4 p.m. Monday, McCluskey said.
Bail was set at $25,000.
