Final Job Fair for Naval Shipyard Workers Is Today

The last of a series of job fairs is scheduled today for more than 400 Long Beach Naval Shipyard workers still hoping to find new jobs before the facility’s scheduled closing Sept. 30.
About 40 companies, including aerospace contractor Lockheed Martin, are slated to attend the Terminal Island event, one of several fairs over the past year to be organized by Long Beach and sponsored by the federal Job Training Partnership Act.
Shipyard personnel have been preparing for the facility’s closure since it was added to a 1995 list of military installations to be dismantled. City officials, hoping to create at least some new jobs, have asked Navy brass to divide the shipyard’s 254 acres into a container terminal for the nearby Port of Long Beach, an 18-acre ship repair yard estimated to preserve about 450 jobs and a scrap yard.
The facility once employed about 3,000 workers. While some of them have transferred to other naval shipyards across the country, others have taken early retirement.
