Elderly Woman Killed After Cigarette Ignites Blaze

A 78-year-old San Pedro woman confined to a wheelchair died early Tuesday morning in an apartment fire caused by her smoking in bed, Los Angeles fire officials said.
Firefighters were called to the three-story apartment in the 900 block of West 14th Street shortly after midnight. The blaze was contained to the victim’s first-floor apartment. The fire was extinguished in 11 minutes and caused an estimated $20,000 damage.
The woman’s name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
