Steel workers in three states voted overwhelmingly for a new contract, ending their 10-month strike at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.--the longest strike of a major steel company in modern history. The labor agreement was approved 3,105-817, according to United Steelworkers district representative Santo Santoro. The strike affected workers in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The vote to ratify the labor pact means some workers will return to work as soon as today, said John R. Scheessele of Wheeling-Pitt.
