Boylan Hits the Wall--First

As hectic a two weeks as it has been for Heather Boylan, it could have been worse.
Swimming back-to-back in the Phillips 66 U.S. Championships and the western region of the Speedo Junior Championships in Clovis, Boylan was able to compete with the best swimmers in the nation and feel the satisfaction of victory.
Boylan, who swims for Rose Bowl Aquatics and Saugus High, won the 200-meter freestyle in 2:05.35 at the junior meet last week.
Boylan went to Clovis after finishing 28th in the 400 individual medley at the national meet three time zones away. Because her individual event was on the first day of competition, she trained the rest of the week for the junior meet.
Teammate Carly Geehr of La Canada Flintridge was also supposed to compete in both meets but Geehr, 12, qualified for the Pan Pacific Games in Japan this week and skipped the Clovis meet.
“I just couldn’t let the travel get to me,” Boylan said. “It worked out pretty well. I’m used to it by now.”
Boylan was second in the 400 freestyle, seventh in the 200 backstroke and 17th in the 200 individual medley.
Joel Everman of Notre Dame High and Rose Bowl qualified for the national meet for the first time with a second-place finish in the 800 freestyle, finishing in 8:20.62. He was eighth in the 400 freestyle and ninth in the 1,500.
Kenny Carpenter of Crescenta Valley High and Rose Bowl Aquatics was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 200 butterfly.
Ryan Parmenter of Hart High was fourth in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle.
Mark Warkentin of Buenaventura was second in the 200 individual medley.
Mike Scarcelli, a 1996 graduate of Crespi High, was fourth in the 50 freestyle.
