Seagram Profit More Than Doubles

Seagram Co.’s fiscal fourth-quarter profit, before gains, more than doubled, led by strong performances by its entertainment, juice and spirits businesses. The Montreal-based beverage and entertainment company said profit from operations before a gain rose to $48 million, or 13 cents a share, from profit before a gain of $22 million, or 5 cents, in the year-earlier period. The per-share results matched estimates. . . . Tele-Communications Inc., the nation’s largest cable TV operator, said its second-quarter loss narrowed by 18% to $154 million, compared with a loss of $187 million a year earlier. . . . Federated Department Stores Inc. reported higher second-quarter earnings. Federated, which operates chains including Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, said net income more than doubled to $66.4 million, or 31 cents a share, before a charge, from $32.9 million, or 15 cents, in the year-ago period. . . . Dallas-based CompUSA Inc., the largest computer retailer, said second-quarter net income rose to $22.9 million, or 24 cents a share, from $11.8 million, or 13 cents, a year ago. . . . Cleveland-based OfficeMax Inc. said second-quarter net income rose to $2.45 million, or 2 cents a share, from $2.36 million, or 2 cents, a year earlier. . . . Department store chain Dillard’s reported second-quarter net income of $44.3 million, or 40 cents a share, from $39.5 million, or 35 cents, a year earlier.
