Drug War

Re the Aug. 11 article on how the Colombian environment is being ruined by the narcotics traffickers: It is a tragedy what our drug use has done to that country. First its political system was corrupted, and now its environment. The statement by one Colombian official, that the war on drugs was justified by the environmental destruction alone, shows that the Colombian officials are as out of touch with reality as our own government officials.
The war on drugs is the direct cause of the destruction of Colombia. It has raised the price of drugs so high that the drug lords can afford to pay off officials, and even raise private armies. This war has been lost. We are even starting to see corruption in our border patrol and drug cops. The more we raise the price of drugs, the more corruption there will be. Wake up and smell the (Colombian) coffee.
