Gregory Lloyd Smith; Environmentalist

Gregory Lloyd Smith, 66, professor and civic activist for environmental causes. Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Smith earned his degrees at Reed College and the University of Washington and served in the Army during the Korean War. A geographer and teacher, he taught at Cal State Dominguez Hills from 1968 to 1992. Smith was former head of the Los Angeles Tree Commission, president of the Point Fermin Residents Assn. and active in the Coalition Los Angeles and Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters. He was chiefly responsible for the Christmas Tree Grove at Ft. MacArthur sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce’s Beautification of San Pedro project. Smith also worked on the Cabrillo Museum and Marina Committee and the Ft. MacArthur Land Use Committee. On July 29 on Echo Peak near South Lake Tahoe of a heart attack while hiking.
