Cambodians to Denounce Youth Violence at Rally

Members of Long Beach’s Cambodian community plan to denounce youth violence during a rally at City Hall today in honor of a 16-year-old boy who was killed in a drive-by shooting this month.
Organizers said the demonstration will focus on the life of Simona Rin, a member of the Long Beach-based United Cambodian Community’s Youth Scope advisory council. He was fatally shot Aug. 1 on his way to a basketball game.
Cambodian youths “feel that this positive action will give a more meaningful purpose to the death of their friend and role model,” Youth Scope staff member Marin Um said.
Rin had recently toured the West Coast as a member of the organization’s traditional Cambodian dance group. He also counseled his peers in a program at St. Mary Medical Center in which young men are advised on how to avoid teen pregnancy.
