County Panel Approves Plan to Annex 302 Acres

Despite objections from environmentalists, a county commission has approved Long Beach’s plan to annex 302 acres--including some federally protected wetlands--of unincorporated territory southeast of the city limits.
The Local Agency Formation Commission, which must vote on such annexations, chose to overlook the objections of wetlands supporters who want to protect the area from development. City officials want to use the hourglass-shaped vacant land for commercial and residential development.
The commission voted 7-2 Wednesday to approve annexation of the land that lies east of Pacific Coast Highway at Westminster Avenue, near two of Long Beach’s largest shopping centers.
The city plans to allow the development of about 700 homes, office buildings and a 100-acre wildlife park. The annexation will return to the City Council for a vote.
