Re “Closing Down Failing Schools,” Aug. 6:
Sandra Feldman, the new president of the American Federation of Teachers, fails to mention the key change needed for schools to succeed--students’ responsibility for their own education. Before closing down failing schools and transferring teachers, let’s do something about social promotion. This is being done in the Chicago and Long Beach schools.
