Track Officials Should Try Asking These Fans

Craig Masback [Aug. 8] has several ideas to salvage track and field in the U.S. and concedes that most of his ideas will annoy the purists. Does Europe resort to gimmicks to gain an audience? I think not.
U.S. coverage of the World Championships was a perfect example. Television coverage was on cable at 9:30 p.m. on weeknights. On the final day, more time was spent on NBC replaying the “glamour” events than on showing the final day’s events.
U.S. track and field will never be popular if the only time we hear about an athlete is if he or she wins a gold medal.

America’s track athletes would be better known if America’s media would do a better job of reporting track and field. How about giving us some consistent track news or even some track stats to peruse. I mean, I can read who grounded into a double play, but track results? Forget it.
