Erykah Badu has recorded “A Child With the Blues,” a new song written by Curtis Mayfield for the soundtrack of “Eve’s Bayou,” a film co-produced by and starring Samuel L. Jackson. Aaron Neville and Branford Marsalis are among those appearing in the film, which premieres in October. . . .
The upcoming album “The Iggy Pop Tribute: We Will Fall,” which benefits the AIDS awareness organization LifeBEAT, includes a surprise. The band Adolph’s Dog, which does the song “Ordinary Bummer,” is actually the reunited Blondie under a pseudonym--derived from the fact that Hitler had a dog named Blondie.
Producer-keyboardist Mitchell Froom has called upon some impressive clients and associates to sing on his own album, “Dopamine,” due in January from Geffen. Among those providing vocals are Sheryl Crow, Los Lobos’ Louie Perez, Ron Sexsmith and Suzanne Vega--who happens to be Froom’s wife. . . .
Orange County ska band Reel Big Fish is getting big in Miami, where the line “everybody’s doing the fish” from the song “Trendy” has been used as a between-innings dance-along at Florida Marlins baseball games. Now the band’s signed to perform a ska version of “The Star Spangled Banner” before a Nov. 17 Miami Dolphins football game. . . .
Steve Vai and Sony executive John Kalodner are assembling “Merry Axemas,” an instrumental album of seasonal hits newly recorded by a roster of top guitarists, including Jeff Beck, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, Rush’s Alex Lifeson, Queen’s Brian May, Joe Satriani and Brian Setzer.
