Dumais Brothers Make History

Brothers Troy and Justin Dumais of Ventura took the top two places in the three-meter springboard event Saturday at the National Diving Championships in Dallas.

Troy’s victory came a day after he won the one-meter springboard and Justin’s runner-up finish made them the first brothers in U.S. diving history to finish 1-2 in the national championships.

If Troy, a 17-year-old senior-to-be at Buena High, wins the platform final today, he would be the first man to win all three events at the national championships since four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis in 1988.

ATHLETICS

Pierce College Athletic Director Bob Lyons will present a proposal to school administrators Monday that will cut operating costs for the Brahmas’ athletic program, but preserve its 10 teams.

The proposal was formulated at an emergency meeting on Saturday attended by Lyons, football Coach Bill Norton, men’s tennis Coach Aris Hovesepian, men’s and women’s volleyball Coach Turhan Douglas and men’s and women’s swimming Coach Fred Shaw.

“We discussed alternate ways to trim our budget, but keep the program intact,” Lyons said. “I will present our proposal and hopefully it will fly.”

GYMNASTICS

Vanessa Atler of Canyon Country fell on the uneven bars, her final event, but still tied for the all-around title in the U.S. Championships in Denver.

Atler, 15, had a lead of .65 points but Kristy Powell of River Forest, Ill., scored a 9.3 on the balance beam while Atler tallied an 8.65 on the uneven bars.

It was the first tie for the women’s all-around title in the national championships since 1972, when Joan Moore and Cathy Rigby were co-champions.

BASEBALL

The Valley White Sox finished second behind the Carson Reds in the AAU national championships for 13-year-olds that concluded Friday night in Riverside.

The White Sox, comprised of players from Mid Valley Pony in Encino and Sylmar Independent, had 20 home runs in the tournament and posted a 7-3 record.
