Dooley, Marino Spark Crew’s Upset Win

From Associated Press

Thomas Dooley and Pete Marino both scored as the Columbus Crew defeated Washington D.C. United, 2-0, Saturday night before 15,355 at Ohio Stadium.

Columbus (10-14), with the league’s second-best defense, held the league’s highest-scoring offense scoreless as Crew goalkeeper Brad Friedel made six saves to record his fifth shutout.

D.C. United (16-9) lost in regulation for only the second time in 25 games.

Dooley opened the scoring in the 68th minute on a hard shot from 10 yards. Marino doubled the lead four minutes later.

United played without MLS scoring co-leader Jaime Moreno and midfielder Marco Etcheverry, both on World Cup ’98 qualifying duty with Bolivia.
