Yankees Get Sanchez from Cubs

The New York Yankees, needing a backup middle infielder, acquired Rey Sanchez from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday for minor league pitcher Frisco Parotte.
The move was necessitated when reserve Luis Sojo broke a bone in his left arm Thursday when he was hit by a pitch. Sojo is expected to sit out the remainder of the regular season.
Sanchez, 29, batted .249 with one homer and 12 RBIs in 97 games for the Cubs this season. He made 27 starts at second base and 23 at shortstop.
Before the game, Manager Joe Torre said the Yankees were speaking to three teams about a veteran middle infielder. Sanchez will back up Derek Jeter at shortstop and Pat Kelly at second.
Sanchez is expected to report today, at which time a roster move will have to be made, probably meaning the return of Homer Bush to triple-A Columbus. Bush had been recalled Friday after Sojo’s injury.
Parotte, 21, was 1-1 with two saves and a 4.19 earned-run average in 18 relief appearances for Class-A Greensboro.

The Baltimore Orioles put right-hander Shawn Boskie on the 15-day disabled list, a day after he hurt his pitching arm in a game against Seattle. Boskie’s start Tuesday against Kansas City will be taken by Estaban Yan, who is scheduled to be called up from triple-A Rochester. . . . The Chicago White Sox fired hitting coach Bill Buckner because of a personality clash with Manager Terry Bevington, and named first-base coach Ron Jackson as his replacement.
