Youths Punished for Use of Spanish at Camp

ZEANURI, Spain — It is OK to tell scary stories around the campfire--but don’t speak Spanish at a summer camp here.
Children 9 to 11 years old were slapped and were forced to carry rocks in their backpacks, sleep outside and go without dinner if they were caught speaking Spanish instead of the regional Basque language, the Spanish daily El Mundo reported Saturday. At least five families have complained.
