Vigilante update--There are only 14 games left in the second half for the Vigilantes, who have yet to start a strong second-half run as they did the last two seasons when the team was based in Long Beach. Each time the team went on to win the league title. Sonoma County (19-12) leads the Southern Division by three games over Chico and six over Mission Viejo. The good news for the Vigilantes is that Mike Smith (9-4) starts tonight and Paul Anderson (4-8) goes Tuesday. Smith was selected as the league’s pitcher of the year and Anderson, who won the same award last year, is coming off a 3-2, complete-game victory over Reno on Thursday. Carl Nichols is hitting .346 this month and is at .302 for the season. Mission Viejo is 32-44.
Heat update--Chico has won seven of the last 11, including two in a row. The Heat is led on offense by Paul Corey, who is hitting .348 with six homers and 41 runs batted in through 75 games. Ken Shamburg and Terrel Hansen have each hit 20 homers for Chico, which is 38-38 overall.
