50 At-Risk Youths to Attend Retreat

Fifty at-risk youths from Oxnard, Port Hueneme, El Rio and Santa Paula will leave Wednesday for an intensive five-day retreat in Big Bear that marks the beginning of the third annual Breakthrough for Success youth program.
The yearlong program is sponsored by the Latino advocacy group El Concilio del Condado de Ventura.
The idea is to ensure that teenagers who may be first-time offenders, high-school dropouts or have other problems do not succumb to the pressures of adolescent life, said program manager Cesar Hernandez.
“They’ll be focusing upon different issues, exploring their problems,” including how to talk to their parents effectively and discussing the fears and barriers in their lives, Hernandez said.
Upon their return from the retreat, the youths, who range in age from 13 to 18, will link up with adult mentors with whom they will meet weekly for a year.
