Cambodians in Flight North

CHONG CHOM PASS, Thailand — Cambodian refugees streamed into neighboring Thailand by the tens of thousands late Monday, fleeing what they feared was an imminent assault by troops loyal to Cambodian coup leader Hun Sen.
The nighttime exodus came in advance of what refugees and Thai forces expected would be an all-out fight after daybreak today for the village of O’Smach, last stronghold of supporters of ousted First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
An estimated 30,000 people--mostly civilians--had massed at the border-area village for weeks, desperate to escape the violence accompanying the July coup.
