At Least 24 Killed in Taiwan as Typhoon Winnie Rakes Island

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Typhoon Winnie swept over Taiwan on Monday, killing at least 24 people and flooding large sections of the island. It then headed toward southeast China, whipping up 92 mph winds.
Rescuers were searching for 12 people believed trapped in a collapsed apartment complex in the Taipei suburb of Hsichih. At least 12 others were crushed to death Monday when land beneath the structure gave way, police said.
A landslide in the mountains north of the capital killed six people, including two children, and a landslide in Taipei, the capital, killed a man. Three people drowned in the basement of their home northeast of Taipei.
In Ilan County, 30 miles east of Taipei, a fisherman drowned after being swept off a breakwater by high waves. A would-be burglar died when strong winds knocked him off a roof, police said.
