Neon Bowler Sign Re-Lit After 50 Years in Dark

After being dark for over 50 years, the large neon sign above an Echo Park bowling alley will be re-lit tonight, once again flashing the image of a bowler winding up, releasing a bowling ball and scattering pins.
“The humor and design of the neon bowler has a kind of down-to-earth stylishness that absolutely fits the area,” City Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg, who represents the area, said Tuesday.
Money to refurbish the sign above Jensen’s Recreation Center on Sunset Boulevard came from a $15,000 Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department grant.
