Sun Microsystems Begins Plant Construction

Sun Microsystems Inc. said it began construction on the first phase of a $282-million manufacturing plant in Newark--near San Francisco--part of plans to meet rising demand for its products. When completed, the Gateway Technology Center will cover 1 million square feet and include manufacturing plants for desktop servers and storage products, as well as office space, said Bill Agnello, a Sun vice president. The first phase of the Newark plant is scheduled for completion in 1998 and will consist of about 210,000 square feet.
