Aumua’s Call Finally Comes

Senior nose guard Ron Aumua is finally a proud father.
Aumua’s girlfriend, Vanessa Vranek, gave birth Wednesday in Walnut Creek, Calif., to the couple’s first child, Marley, a girl who weighed 7 pounds 15 ounces.
Aumua, who carried a pager to practices while waiting for Vranek to go into labor, flew to Northern California on Tuesday and watched the delivery. He returned to practice Thursday.
“One of the best experiences of my life,” Aumua said. “It’s an incentive for me to work harder now. I’m not only working for myself, but for my family.”

The Matadors were dealt a potentially serious blow Thursday when offensive right tackle Julio Alcala sprained an ankle during an intrasquad scrimmage.
Alcala, a sophomore transfer from Colorado State, was working with the first string.
“There’s a good chance we won’t have him for Boise,” Coach Jim Fenwick said.
Northridge opens with a nonconference game at Boise State on Aug. 30.
