Addie J. Butler of Philadelphia has been elected vice president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the 5.2-million member denomination’s highest office for a member of the laity.
The vote at the denomination’s church-wide assembly meeting this week in Philadelphia made Butler the third vice president in the church’s 10-year history and the first African American elected to the post. She succeeds Kathy Magnus.
