Man Kills Ex-Girlfriend, Self at Santa Clara High-Tech Plant

A former employee killed his estranged girlfriend and took his own life Friday at a Silicon Valley high-tech company, police said.

The double shooting occurred at NEC Electronics after the man showed up at the company and took the woman into a conference room. Police evacuated the building and got into the conference room through the ceiling to find the two people dead.

The gunman was identified only as a 34-year-old who once worked for the company. The woman was not immediately identified.

NEC said it is offering grief counseling for its 1,800 employees.

The company is part of NEC Corp. of Japan, which is a leader in the semiconductor, computer and communications industries. NEC Electronics makes and markets semiconductor devices and electronic components, including flat-panel displays, in Santa Clara.
