Jones Wins and Records Fall in Brussels

Marion Jones became the third-fastest woman ever in the 100 meters with a clocking of 10.76 seconds but she was overshadowed by world record performances by Kenyan distance runners Daniel Komen and Paul Tergat at the Van Damme Memorial track and field meet Friday at Brussels, Belgium.
Komen shattered the 5,000-meter record, clocking 12 minutes 39.74 seconds and bettering Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie’s record of 12:41.86 set 10 days ago.
Tergat set a new mark in the 10,000 meters with a time of 26:27.85, chopping 3.47 seconds off the mark set by Gebrselassie last month.
Jearl Miles-Clark finished third in the 800 at 1:56.78, breaking the U.S. women’s record of 1:56.90 set by Mary Slaney in 1985. Maria Mutola of Mozambique won in 1:56.45.

Australian Davis Cup player Patrick Rafter defeated second-ranked Michael Chang, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, to advance to the semifinals of the Hamlet Cup in Commack, N.Y. Rafter will face Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist, a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 winner over Richey Reneberg. Julian Alonso, a 20-year-old Spaniard ranked 72nd in the world, upset fourth-ranked Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3, and will play countryman Carlos Moya in the other semifinal. Moya, ranked No. 8, defeated Germany’s Marc-Kevin Goellner, 6-4, 6-4. . . . Unseeded Sandrine Testud of France upset third-seeded Iva Majoli, the French Open champion, 7-5, 6-3, in the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Hardcourt Championships at Stone Mountain, Ga. . . . Top seeded Alex Corretja of Spain was defeated by Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the MFS Pro Championships in Boston. . . . Lilia Osterloh of Stanford and Thomas Dupre of Mississippi State are Tennis Magazine/Rolex College Players of the Year.
Pro Basketball
The Boston Celtics signed former Cleveland Cavalier swingman Chris Mills and Sacramento Kings guard Tyus Edney to free-agent contracts. With Mills gone, Cleveland can now make a better offer to free agent Rick Fox, who played with Boston last season and is also being pursued by the Lakers.
College Basketball
According to the Arizona Republic, a federal grand jury is investigating allegations that former Arizona State point guard Stevin “Hedake” Smith, second on the school’s all-time scoring list, took thousands of dollars from a gambler who bet heavily against the Sun Devils in 1994. The grand jury also is looking into allegations that two other players took money from the gambler.
Fresno State’s internal investigation found no evidence of point-shaving last season by players, according to a university report. A federal investigation, however, is not expected to be completed until next month.

A New York City federal judge dismissed an indictment against Don King Productions Inc. in a case alleging the boxing promoter cheated Lloyds of London.
A steady Russian team capitalized on a mistake by Olympic champion Shannon Miller on the balance beam and defeated the U.S. for the gold medal in women’s gymnastics at the World University Games in Sicily.
Hungarian swimmer Agnes Kovacs won her second gold medal in the European Championships with the second-fastest time (1 minute, 8.02 seconds) in the world this year in the 100-meter breaststroke at Seville, Spain.
Kenny Wallace won the pole with a lap of 123.039 mph for the Goody’s Headache Powders 500 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
The San Jose Sharks traded defenseman Vlastmil Kroupa to the New Jersey Devils for a third-round pick in the 1998 NHL Draft.
