Marion Jones equaled the third-fastest time in the women’s 100 meters with a clocking of 10.76 seconds, but she was overshadowed by world-record performances by Kenyan distance runners Daniel Komen and Paul Tergat at the Van Damme Memorial track and field meet Friday at Brussels.
Komen shattered the 5,000-meter record, clocking 12 minutes 39.74 seconds and bettering Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie’s record of 12:41.86 set 10 days ago.
Tergat set a record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 26:27.85, chopping 3.47 seconds off the mark set by Gebrselassie last month.
Jearl Miles-Clark finished third in the 800 at 1:56.78, but she broke the U.S. record of 1:56.90 set by Mary Slaney in 1985.
Jones matched the 10.76 by Evelyn Ashford in 1984. Only Florence Griffith Joyner (10.49) and Merlene Ottey of Jamaica, whom she beat Friday, are ahead of Jones.
