Northwestern Faces Oklahoma

Northwestern is starting to win as consistently as Oklahoma once did. The paths of those schools cross today in the Pigskin Classic at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Long the doormat of the Big Ten Conference, Northwestern has won or shared successive league titles under Gary Barnett. The Wildcats were 9-3 last season, 7-1 in the Big Ten. Oklahoma was 3-8 in John Blake’s first season.

Promoters of a game at the Rose Bowl between Grambling State and Alabama State are scrambling to raise money to stage one of the last games in Coach Eddie Robinson’s career.

If the promoters, the San Gabriel Valley Black Chamber of Commerce, can’t raise at least $100,000 in the next month, the Nov. 8 game will have to be moved out of Pasadena, said Rich Wallace, president of the nonprofit business group.
