Backyard Sanctuary for the Birds
Have you ever noticed how singing birds make your yard come alive? A backyard bird sanctuary is not just great for the birds, it’s great for people.
The red barn birdhouse, log cabin birdhouse and two feeders pictured here are part of an easy-to-build group of six. All six (three of each) can be built inexpensively (with scrap redwood) and with simple tools.
The three shelters can be mounted on a post or hung from a tree. By slightly varying location and the size of the entry holes, do-it-yourselfers can choose which birds they’d like to attract. The red barn measures about 9 inches tall by 9 inches wide by 10.5 inches long.
The three feeders are this post and seed feeder, plus a fruit feeder. The post feeder and seed feeder hold about 5 pounds of birdseed each, and the fruit feeder holds three pieces fruit.
The Bird Shelters and Feeders plan, No. 684, is $9.95. Each project includes complete step-by-step directions with photos, full-size traceable cutting patterns, exploded diagrams, a shopping list and a cutting schedule. Tips for sizing the holes and determining locations are also included, as are tips for “squirrel-proofing” the feeders.
