Sterilization Reports May Trigger Probe

The government is considering an opposition demand for a probe into allegations that as many as 60,000 women were forcibly sterilized, a government spokesman said. The newspaper Dagens Nyheter has reported that those judged to have “undesirable” racial characteristics or “inferior” qualities, such as poor eyesight or mental retardation, were sterilized under a program from 1935 to 1976.
