World Youth Day Comes Up Short

The resounding success of Pope John Paul II’s four-day stay in France comes with a price--a deficit of $5 million, blamed on youthful pilgrims who failed to pay, organizers said.
John Paul drew more than 1 million people to last Sunday’s Mass at the Longchamp racetrack during World Youth Day. But only $333,000 went into the collection basket.
“That means that everybody gave just 33 cents each,” said Bishop Michel Dubost, who organized World Youth Day, a Catholic event held every other year in a different country.
