* CONGRESSMAN TO SPEAK: Retired U.S. Rep. Anthony C. Beilenson will speak at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Emerson Unitarian-Universalist Church, 7304 Jordan Ave., Canoga Park. The visit will be his first since his retirement and since the church was rebuilt following the 1994 earthquake.

* DIGNITY OF LABOR: The San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council and the Valley Labor Political Education Council will celebrate the dignity of labor in a special Labor Day service featuring City Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg, who will speak on “Work, Welfare and Wages: Establishing a New Value for Labor” at 7 p.m. Monday at Temple Judea, 5429 Lindley Ave., Tarzana. * SAINTS WORKSHOP: “Saints for Every Kind of Suffering,” a one-day workshop presented by writer Ronda Chervin, will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 6. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 45007 Cedar Ave., Lancaster. The workshop is made up of three sessions--”Anger and Loneliness,” “Pain and Loss” and “Divorce and Doubt.” Chervin, a professor of philosophy and theology at Loyola Marymount University, has written more than 40 books on topics such as Catholic practice and spirituality. * ENVIRONMENTAL MINISTRIES: A special Environmental Ministries program will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sept. 6 at Reseda First United Methodist Church, 18120 Saticoy St., Reseda. Keynote speakers Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) and the Rev. Al Cohen, executive director of the Southern California Ecumenical Council and nongovernmental organizations representative at Earth Summit 1992, will discuss environmental issues facing Congress and the Earth Summit, respectively. Book displays, information tables and a presentation of the Environmental Ministries’ budget, projects and resources will be included. A $3 donation is requested for a dinner snack.
