Woman, 90, Found Dead in Pool

A 90-year-old Camarillo woman with a pacemaker was found dead, floating face down in her apartment complex swimming pool Friday.

Helen Chambers was pronounced dead by medical personnel shortly after she arrived at St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital at 3:38 p.m., according to Craig Stevens, senior deputy coroner with the Ventura County medical examiner’s office.

He said residents of Chambers’ apartment complex in the 2000 block of Camilar Drive saw her swimming alone in the pool at about 3:10 p.m.

About five minutes later they returned and said they found her floating face down. Attempts by residents and later by ambulance personnel to revive Chambers with CPR proved futile, Stevens said.

“They worked on her [at the hospital] for about 10 minutes but never got a heart rate or pulse back,” Stevens said.

Foul play has been ruled out.

“[There’s] not a mark on her body,” Stevens said. “And she’s a known regular swimmer.”

Chambers had a history of heart problems that required use of a pacemaker, he said.

An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine if she drowned or had a heart attack.
