Rose’s Son to Make Debut With Reds

Pete Rose Jr., son of baseball’s career hits leader, will be promoted from double-A Chattanooga and start at third base for the Cincinnati Reds on Monday against the Kansas City Royals.
Rose Jr., in his ninth season in the minors, ranks among the Southern League leaders with a .307 batting average (ninth), 25 home runs (sixth) and 97 RBIs (15th).
Meanwhile, the Reds claimed first baseman Mark Johnson off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates and optioned him to triple-A Indianapolis.
Johnson hit .215 with four home runs and 29 RBIs in 78 games with the Pirates this season.

Outfielder Derrick Maddox, son of former Phillie Garry Maddox, has signed a minor league contract with the team for the 1998 season. Maddox, 22, signed as an amateur free agent with the Phillies’ Martinsville, Va., farm team.

Philadelphia Phillie pitcher Reggie Harris had his suspension reduced from five to four games after a hearing with National League President Leonard Coleman. Harris, suspended and fined $1,000 for intentionally throwing at Atlanta’s Andruw Jones on June 22, will be eligible to return to play Tuesday.

The St. Louis Cardinals recalled right-hander Sean Lowe from triple-A Louisville and optioned first-baseman Dmitri Young to Louisville. Young was hitting .257 in 89 games. He lost playing time after St. Louis acquired Mark McGwire last month.
