Pig out: Members of the Cal Lutheran football team got to meet what will eventually be the main course at a barbecue to follow the intrasquad scrimmage this afternoon at Mt. Clef Stadium.

The barbecue idea got more difficult to swallow last weekend when the Kingsmen put a face and a name on the 500-pound pig that will be today’s pork roast.

After being driven in last week from Temecula, kicking and squealing, the porker was put up in a trailer in the garage of Coach Scott Squires’ in-laws. There it dined on boxes of vegetables and cornmeal in between naps. To keep the pig cool, Squires’ wife, Sherith, hosed it down regularly.

“We were hosing him down by the weight room and some of the players were walking by and they’re like, ‘Well, I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to eat it now,’ ” Sherith Squires said.

“His name’s Boink, and the worst part is, he’s like, cute, you know? We were all kind of standing around, and we were all really kind of sad, looking at him. We took lots of pictures. I don’t know what we’re going to do with them now.”

The scrimmage starts at 11 a.m. The barbecue is open to the public at $5 per plate.

Been there: When running back Topi Sanchez considered quitting the Cal Lutheran football team over fears that he might aggravate an old knee injury, he knew where to go for advice.

Kingsmen wide receiver Tom Herman has undergone 10 knee surgeries--seven on the right, three on the left--since his junior year of high school.

“He just asks himself, ‘Is it worth it?’ ” said Sanchez, who returned to the team last week after missing 1 1/2 days of practice. “That’s something I had to answer for myself. I feel more confident now. Everything’s positive right now.”

Said Herman: “I hope I had an influence on him. You just have to ask yourself if it’s worth it. Not a day goes by that I don’t ask myself that question. It’s scary, but you’ve kind of got to be bigger than it.

“I can relate to his being concerned and having some doubts, but I can’t relate to him wanting to quit.”

Gelt out: Freshman tight end Brian Gelt of Glendale College is expected to be sidelined four weeks because of a broken right wrist, Coach John Cicuto said.

Gelt caught nine passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns last season for Canyon High.
