Attractive Deal for Bonds

The presence of first-year Coach Jim Bonds, a former UCLA and Hart High quarterback, has generated excitement around the Alemany High football program and attracted two impact transfers--lineman Chad Dyslin and quarterback Casey Clausen, both from La Canada High.

Bonds said he walks a tightrope. He wants to build a desirable program, but he doesn’t want to recruit to do it.

“With all the open enrollment now, it’s a very fine line,” Bonds said. “I despise free agency in pro sports and it seems it’s filtering down. I would hate to be accused of recruiting but I think one of the reasons I was hired at Alemany was to attract good players.”

Despite the serious nature of the issue, Bonds maintains a sense of humor when it comes to the idea of himself as a guru to whom players will flock.

“I was having my football camp this summer and I told [Hart Coach Mike Herrington] that I was going to post flyers on his players’ lockers,” Bonds said. “He cussed me out pretty good.”

Show time: Al Durham, in his first year as head football coach at First Lutheran High in Sylmar, got some good news Friday when he learned that the Falcons have been chosen to appear on Channel 7’s Monday Night Live following the Denver-New England game on Oct. 6.

Durham’s son, Frank, is a sophomore at First Lutheran. He wrote a letter to KABC inquiring about appearing on the show and the Falcons were one of 19 teams chosen from a pool of 170, according to Al Durham.

“I’m just tickled to death,” Al Durham said. “This team can use all the exposure it can get.”

The $1,000 that each team receives for appearing on the show will also help in the purchase of new equipment.
