Sigel, Matadors Start Strong at Tournament

Freshman hitter Kristin Sigel from Mira Costa High made an immediate impact for the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team on Friday.
Her strong performance helped the Matadors win two matches to begin the season in the DePaul Invitational at Alumni Hall in Chicago.
Sigel had nine kills and led Northridge with 19 digs in the first match, an 11-15, 15-6, 16-14, 15-5 victory over the host Blue Demons. Senior Nancy Ma had 21 kills and 15 digs for the Matadors. Sophomore Nicki Midwin contributed 12 kills and 14 digs.
In the second match, Sigel had 11 kills and a match-leading 27 digs, and four service aces as the Matadors defeated the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 15-6, 10-15, 15-5, 13-15, 16-14.
Ma was the kill leader with 20, and she had 17 digs. Sophomore setter Ellie Flato had 49 assists in the DePaul match, and contributed 44 assists and 24 digs against Wisconsin-Green Bay.
The Matadors continue tournament play today with matches against Evansville and Eastern Illinois.
