Boxer Seeks Conflict Probe in Mine Ruling
- Share via
U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) has called for an investigation of the Interior Department’s decision to approve a company’s claims to mine gold in Imperial County near Quechan Indian cultural and religious sites.
Boxer asked the department’s inspector general to examine potential conflicts of interest on the part of Interior Secretary Gale Norton, Deputy Secretary Stephen Griles and others who played a role in advancing a proposal by Glamis Gold Ltd. of Reno, Nev.
Glamis wants to open the mine, which had been blocked by the Clinton administration, on 1,571 acres of federal land.
