Strong Second Half Again the Difference for Virginia

Billy McMullen ran for the go-ahead touchdown and Matt Schaub threw for another score as Virginia rallied to beat Clemson, 22-17, Saturday at Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers, 5-2 and 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, won their fifth consecutive game and again did their best work in the second half, outscoring the Tigers, 16-7. They have outscored opponents, 140-70, after halftime this season.

Clemson (3-3, 1-2) started the game with a 19-play, 93-yard drive that ended with a field goal, but managed only one more meaningful score and hurt itschances with two turnovers late in the fourth quarter.

A seven-play, 92-yard drive, capped by Charlie Whitehurt’s 10-yard touchdown pass to J.J. McKelvey, gave Clemson hope with 1 minute 31 seconds remaining, but Virginia recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

No. 14 North Carolina State 34, North Carolina 17 -- Freshman T.A. McLendon, playing with a cast on his broken right wrist, ran for a season-high 164 yards and two touchdowns to help the Wolfpack (7-0, 2-0) win at Chapel Hill, N.C. North Carolina is 2-4 and 0-2.

Wake Forest 36, Duke 10 -- The Demon Deacons (4-3, 2-2) scored on a 90-yard return of a blocked field goal by Eric King and won at Winston-Salem, N.C. Duke (2-5, 0-3) lost its 20th consecutive ACC game.
