Senegal dismissed a high-ranking naval officer over last month’s ferry disaster in which nearly 1,000 people were drowned when the overladen vessel capsized, state TV said.
Rescuers recovered 64 survivors from among the 1,034 people on board the Joola. The ferry overturned after being caught by fierce gusts of wind and rain in one of Africa’s worst maritime disasters. The vessel, en route to the capital, Dakar, from Ziguinchor in Senegal’s southern province of Casamance, was designed to carry 550 passengers.
