La Verne-Redlands Game Suspended After Player’s Injury

La Verne quarterback Rollie Dykstra was in critical condition Saturday night at Pomona Valley Medical Center after he collapsed with 8 minutes 14 seconds left in the second quarter of a game against Redlands.
Dykstra, a senior from Redlands, went to the sideline following a head-to-head collision on an option play. Dykstra kept the ball on the play and as he tried to split two defenders, he lowered his head and collided with a defensive player.
After he went to the sideline, Dykstra collapsed and went into convulsions. He was taken to Pomona Valley Medical Center, where he was unconscious and listed in critical condition from head trauma, according to Frank Garcia, a hospital spokesman who said the family would not allow any more information to be released.
Both teams agreed to suspend the game with Redlands leading, 24-0.
