After 12 years of planning, government, philanthropic and corporate figures joined with schoolchildren Friday to break ground on a model urban nature center at Ernest E. Debs Regional Park.
The $18-million center should be completed next year, according to directors of the Audubon Society, although they acknowledged that $8 million still must be raised to finance it.
A 5,000-square-foot facility will be constructed to house administrative offices and to stage programs.
But most of the project will be parks, trails and plants on 190 acres.
