An Irvine police officer pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he beat a man at his girlfriend’s Torrance home last summer, authorities said.
Paul Gebert, 33, was charged with one felony count each of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury and of battery with serious bodily injury, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said.
Gebert was off-duty on July 8 when he showed up at his girlfriend’s home, saw a friend of hers on a couch and started beating the man, prosecutors said.
The man suffered serious injuries, prosecutors said.
Gebert faces up to seven years in state prison if he is convicted of all charges.
The Irvine Police Department put Gebert on leave July 10, and he has been under personnel investigation since then, spokeswoman Kim Mohr said.
