Navy Ensign Jean M. Kim, daughter of Bok S. Kim of Huntington
Beach and In Y. Kim of Los Angeles, recently received her commission
as a Naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School at
Pensacola, Fla. During the 13-week program, Kim studied navigation,
ship-handling, engineering, naval warfare and management. She also
completed a daily physical fitness program that involved running,
swimming and calisthenics ... Marine Corps Pvt. Markus A. Hartmann,
son of Huntington Beach residents Laurie L. and Rudolph L. Hartmann ,
recently completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot
in San Diego. Hartmann began his training at 5 a.m. by running three
miles and performing calisthenics. More training included learning
first aid, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat
and assorted weapons training. Hartmann and his fellow recruits ended
the training phase by completing “The Crucible,” a team exercise that
ends in a ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps
Emblem and addressed as Marines for the first time ... Kendra Baird
graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a bachelor’s degree in global
studies with an emphasis in culture and ideology. She is a 2000
graduate of Huntington Beach High School and the daughter of
Huntington Beach residents Don and Paula Baird ... Marine Corps Pfc.
Eric S. Axe recently completed the Basic Assault Amphibian Vehicle
Crewman’s Course at Camp Pendleton. Marines in the course learn to
use landing crafts to transport troops and supplies from ships to
beachheads for missions on the shore. His father is Huntington Beach
resident John D. Axe ... The Orange County Water District named
Huntington Beach resident Patti Wimmerstedt June employee of the
month. She is a buyer in the district’s purchasing department and has
worked for it since 1985. Despite her workload, she has also acquired
a Purchasing Manager’s Certificate.
